our cornucopia runneth over with deliciousness and good times!!!

welcome to autumn! we have been celebrating the change in seasons with lots and lots of celebration!!! thanks to all who have helped us pull off some major feats in baking history!!! we did much super fun and exciting baking for the st. johns coffee roasting company's stand at the portland pirate festival. all those puffy sleeves and velvety vests can only make for a great time!!! i saw the tall ships in the river but never managed to get much closer than that because as soon as we had finished baking for 10,000 hungry scalliwags we began preparing for a secret cafe brunch benefit with christy from lilytoad! the benefit was for birth attendants who provide doula services to women in prison. it was so awesome to be able to help out such an amazing project. thank you to everyone who helped us pull it off!!! EXTRA SPECIAL THANK YOU TO: christy from lilytoad, lauren (my number one life saver) from anouk bakery, joel from courier coffee (always delicious!!!), hen house on sauvie island for the ridiculously beautiful dahlias, naomi from red star kombucha, and of course jesse, mckay, joyce, donnie, katherine, tom, eleanor and everyone who attended!! it was such a success that there just might be more of these events to look forward to in the future... anyhoo say farewell to your portland summer tan and get ready for some corn maze and yam time... and a few new bakery items making appearances around town. who wouldn't love to spend a fall afternoon with a slice of wheat-free pumpkin ginger loaf cake (ALBERTA ST. CO-OP), or a wheat-free banana chocolate marble loaf cake (NEW SEASONS: ARBOR LODGE), or maybe you prefer an earl grey tea cupcake with chocolate ganache (ALBERTA ST. CO-OP), or a sweet and spicy chocolate chile mango cupcake (what??? so good!!!) (RED & BLACK CAFE) and if you're feeling like a homebody 'cause it's fall try some BAKE-AT-HOME STICKY BUNS from CENA in st. johns! i love autumn!!!!!

XOXO,
love,
morgan

summer fruits & hot fresh cookies!

oh hey old friends! it's been a while (maybe even more than that), but i'm back. summer is in full swing and berries everywhere are making me really happy! summer stone fruits are also the highlights of many of my days. i think the plum might be at the top of my list right now. there is something magical that happen inside of a plum. i even love a prune. don't knock 'em 'til you've tried 'em. more on plums and prunes next time... but for now the exciting news i would like to share with you is that you can now buy bake at home dovetail bakery cookies and scones!!!! for those of you who know and love st. johns you can just head on over to cena at the corner of ivanhoe & john ave. for those of you less familiar with one of my favorite neighborhoods, cena can be found right across from the the post office on your way to the st. johns bridge. they carry premade and assemble-yourself dinners that you take home and cook. lots of veggie options. i'm so excited about bake at home cookies because #1 they are tiny size! #2 sometimes you need a HOT cookie #3 stores close early and sometimes you need a hot cookie late at night! #4 they are great for impressing a date in a pinch. HOT cookie and soymilk are too charming to pass up! #5 you can even bake them in the toaster oven!!! i could keep going on like this all night. anyhoo... hope you all enjoy the latest dovetail bakery developments. take care and hope you are all enjoying some sweet moments in the sun!

love,
morgan

auntie m

so maybe you know already, but maybe you don't... i got a niece!!! wren got born on april 9, 2008. i'm not sure anything could be more fun than that. this means lots of time that isn't spent baking has been spent watching her sleep, and sometimes throw up. even that looks cute on her. and outside of the house, it still feels like winter, but spring fever is catching up with me. the garden is late, but on its way. this year will be about winter squash, my new five-in-one apple tree, and a few other odds and ends. spring is also about some new spots for you to enjoy dovetail bakery treats at. please enjoy them at the red & black at it's new location on se 12th! so cute inside and maybe some of the friendliest folks too! you can eat pecan squares, coconut caramel squares, wheat-free lemon cornmeal scones with organic raspberry jam, and aunt miriam's sticky buns!!! they are named after my real aunt miriam, sister to my mom margaret, the best mom ever! she has been visiting from los angeles (my home town), but will be headed back there on monday. i'm pretty 110% certain that she'll be back soon. maybe she'll even enjoy a little behind the scenes work at good old dovetail bakery. thanks mom!!!

spring snow

spring is too magical. just when lauren and i got all geared up to ride our bikes home through the rain and hail, the sky opened up and we had sunshine the whole way! it was that kind of magical sun that makes the grass so green it burns your eyes a little. and it's also the season for what jesse calls "spring snow", when all the blossoms from all the cherry trees and every other flower-covered tree blow around in drifts! too much! i can't stand it! we have also been listening to "in defense of food" by michael pollan, which is really making me happy every single day. i know there is a lot more to say on the subject, but it has definitely made me re-excited about eating and enjoying food with friends and loved ones! sometimes i feel like the luckiest person alive that i get to make food that i love and share it with other people for a living. thanks to all who make that possible!!! enjoy the spring snow!!!
